I’m working on a Sleeping Beauty-related commission and believe it or not I don’t remember to have ever drawn the fairies before. So I’ve spent my few free moments over the weekend sketching them doing all sorts of silly and unusual things (like dancing ballet!) to get a feel for their design.
It’s what I usually do to learn how to draw an animated character; I look up screencaps and modelsheets (where possible) but then instead of drawing it doing something it would had done in the movie I pick something else. It removes temptation to be lazy and copy poses from the movie (or even unconsciously to do it) so I actually have to think of the character for myself.
There’s a new Disney Princess artwork page header on the Disney Store website with some of the girls having slightly different hairstyles. I don’t agree with all of the changes (Belle looks like she’s been through a wind tunnel and gone all TOWIE/Jersey Shore with extensions) but it’s nice to see change in the official art since it’s usually so boringly static.

Quick Mulan sketch to relax. I’m working on some non-personal stuff still, every time I’m doing a drawing for someone else, be it a commission/kiriban/special request my brain just goes into OCD mode and nothing’s ever good and everything has to be perfect so it takes time…

Belle and Ariel drawn out of my vague memories of 80s fashion. Ah the awesomeness of frizzy hair, Merida would had fitted right in as she is. I also wish I had fluorescent watercolour so I could had spiced this up a bit, when I started school I had a winter coat and trousers that were entirely fluorescent yellow. Oh they were amazing.
